Fifth Grade 2010-2011

Page history last edited by anne courie-meulink 12 years, 9 months ago

For our final two projects we learned about perspective and the ways it can be manipulated.  We studies the work of MC Escher, and created both one point perspective drawings as well as creating our own tessellations.  The one point perspective project was harder than many students expected, but with a bit of effort and ingenuity they carried it off well!  The tessellation project was in conjunction with a math project that was carried out in the classroom.  During math the students were given a form to replicate, where in our art room the students created their own forms that they had to "read" to come up with the subjects they created.

Fifth graders learned how Native Americans create pottery used in everyday life.  Then they created traditional coil pots using ancient techniques still used today all over the world, decorating them with their own personal flair.

Fifth graders have created a class quilt using different paper making processes.  They have been taught the basics of quilt making, its history, and about traditional quilters, as well as quilting artists today.  They created abstract designs that were transferred to foam, printed onto handmade paper that they created using warm or cool colored tissue paper, then pieced all of their squares together to create a class quilt.  They are gorgeous!!

Art By Me! Fifth Graders theme was Biomes.  We talked about the many different types of Biomes all over the world, and what you might expect to find in each region.  Then students chose which Biome they would illustrate, showing the animal life, vegetation and landscape.  Beautiful!!

Weaving on a small cardboard loom is always a favorite activity with fifth graders.  For a few weeks students learned the basics of weaving, and were encouraged to experiment on this first sampler weaving project with techniques, materials and colors.   Here are the first two finished projects.   Some of the materials in the weavings include acrylic yarn, feathers and plastic beads.  Lovely!!

After working so very hard on a multi-step project our fifth graders have completed this extravaganza and the final works are magnificent!  They stained white paper with warm or cool colored tissue paper, created a contour drawing of a large potted plant, then divided up and created patterns in the background.  *This lesson was shared in a PLC, Professional Learning Community, workshop this past Fall by art teacher extraordinaire Cathy Godwin!

Students read The Dot  by Peter Reynolds.  They then began an abstract drawing beginning with a dot.  They will work in sharpie then use tempera paint to give their artwork pizazz.

Entered in the NC State Fair:  Received a merit award! :)
