Our last two projects took us from the mountains of NC to the Sea. In social studies students were assigned a NC lighthouse to research and write about, while in art we created lighthouses in clay, and lastly they learned how to light them using a circuit in science!
While waiting for our clay to dry and be fired we looked at photographs of our gorgeous Blue Ridge mountains, then created value scales to capture the atmosphere of a mountaintop view. They added silhouettes either in black paint or cut paper, depending on if they had wet or dry paint on their mountains!

We took a "trip" to New Zealand and learned about the Koru Spiral Plants and their meaning and symbolism to the people of New Zealand. We looked at the variety of artwork made with the Koru spiral, and finished with the artwork of Raewyn Harris. Then we created our own watercolor paintings. Another fabulous piece for the students to display in their home gallery!!

Fourth graders just completed a gigantic insect painting. They first drew their gigantic insects using pencil, then traced over the pencil with black sharpie. Next they went over all of their lines using white glue, then decided if they would paint their insect in warm or cool colors, then the background in the opposite. The results are gorgeous!

Art By Me! For the Fourth graders the theme was Undersea. We listed all of the objects that might be found undersea. They choose to illustrate any type of undersea scene they could imagine using markers and colored pencils.

For the fourth grade mandala project students chose their own theme and created beautiful artworks. Some of the themes chosen were sports, animals, holidays, bugs, and the most creative theme, A Series of Unfortunate Events!!

The Fourth graders studied maps and map making, so I thought it would be fun to create our own treasure maps with fantasy islands and magical creatures to reinforce their new found knowledge. They did a terrific job!

Students are creating an Undersea Creature. They will work on Black construction paper with glue and chalk. This project is a bit messy, so be sure to wear your art making clothes!
